Northeast of Bophut and part of a headland is Haad Bang Rak (Bang Rak Beach). It is located close to the airport, is only a 20-minute drive from the busy town of Chaweng. It is a popular place with the expat community. Haad Bang Rak is also locally known as Big Buddha Beach. It takes its name from Wat Pra Yai or Big Buddha Temple. Standing tall across the bay on a small islet linked by a causeway at the end of the beach is the 12-metre (39 ft) high golden seated Buddha image. More about Bang Rak Beach
