Do not drink from tap water, bottled waters are provided in the hotel room. Mineral waters are available in fridges at big hotels. At least boil tap water before drinking.
Tip the bellboy 20-50 baht is fine, but depend on the numbers of your luggage. Tip the housekeepers, if they provide excellent service.
Remember to check your door and window are secure.
Finally, remember that phone call from hotel room is expensive. A hotel meal is more expensive. Enjoy the real Thailand outside, eat at the delightful little restaurants, in the streets and market stalls.
Off the beaten track
Off the tourist routes, you will not find the same sort of accommodation as you expect in the major tourist areas. In small town, you can find a simple guest houses or basic hostels with limited facilities. Remember to arrive at the hotel during daylight, if you are not sure with the direction; please ask at the police station (called ‘satanee tamruat). If you cannot make it, please visit the local temple (wat), and ask for permission to stay overnight. Remember to give some donation when you leave. Normally, you should be able to find some sort of accommodation almost anywhere, but it may not be what you want. Some of them may not have a private bathroom.
